Everyone needs a movie day at school once in a while. Whether the movie is used as a supplement for a given unit of instruction, or as a reward for the class, finding a worthwhile video or show is sometimes challenging. Luckily, Fox decided to air Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey with host Neil deGrasse Tyson. The science is accessible to beginning and advanced learners across many disciplines in science. The entire series is easily found on YouTube and other streaming television subscription services where episodes can be purchased and downloaded separately, or as an entire series. It is also available to purchase as an entire set on DVD through the Fox Broadcasting Network.​​ Cosmos, Episode 3 takes us on a journey with the comets and we learn a lot about the development of physics along the way. This particular episode would be a great tool to use in a physics or a physical science class. Description: During my second week of placement, I was working under the supervision of my preceptor, caring for a fifty four year old Samoan gentlemen, Mr.Li (pseudonym). When we went to his place in Mt. Albert at around 11am, he was sitting on the chair and his wife was sitting beside him. Below are examples of a few companies that have implemented warehousing and material handling successfully Walmart Walmart is an American multinational retail corporation that operates supermarkets and discount stores all over the world. The company had its major operation in the US and later spread across several countries Canada, UK and other Asian countries. The company is known for is unique warehousing techniques used, given that the company has huge procurement orders and have more than 11,000 stores around the world. The company uses a centralized warehouse that caters to stores around. This warehouse called the distribution centre is the point of procurement acting as the hub and supplying the same to the individual stores. This enabled huge procurement to be done at minimum prices (Monczka, 2015). Each centre has several trucks that operate to the store once a week. The company also uses the concept of cross docking where the finished goods are directly picked from vendors and supplied to stores without visiting the DC (Van, 2012). However, the same is done by their efficient warehouse m anagement system. The company initially installed a voice based system where each employee in the distribution centre is provided with a headset that would guide them to the location of the goods for order picking (Van, 2013). For the purpose of capacity management, a retail link system was enabled where the retail suppliers could monitor the distribution centres to analyse the current goods and they would replenish the goods themselves (Herwig, 2013). This later evolved into the CPFR collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment system (Yao, 2013). The company makes use of a Massive Parallel Processor system to keep a track of where and when the goods are being moved in the warehouse. The warehouse is managed using a grid system where the computer stores the coordinates of the goods, since the warehouses are huge and have several kind of goods stocked in. When the Id of a particular good is fed to the system, the system displays the coordinates of the goods location and hence order picking ha s been made relatively easy. Bullwhip effect Bullwhip effect is one of the key concepts of warehousing as it influences the forecasting method of demand of goods. Though supply chain may actually sound pretty simple, if the demand is forecasted incorrectly, inventory management, capacity management and the techniques of warehousing all take a hit. Also known as the Forrester Effect, the concept was implemented by Hau Lee, to help Volvo overcome its material management issues (Lee, 2015). Supply chain is a complex group of functions involves the movement of raw materials from suppliers to the retailers who finally sell them (Bozarth, 2016). These function need to work together to meet customers demand. Supply chains help organization to focus on specific processes that ensure maximum probability through low cost solutions and effective systems. Unfortunately, supply chains many times comes across issues when there is a change in market conditions and the consumer demand shifts. The bullwhip effect in supply chain happens when there is a significant change in consumer demand which makes the companies order more goods and raw materials to meet the new demand (Udenio, 2013). The bullwhip effect usually effects the supply chain in an upward motions. It generally starts with the retailer, wholesaler, distributor, manufacturer and then the raw materials supplier. This effect is witnessed in several companies. The reason is that the companies make demand forecast based on previous purchases, sales, current market conditions and competitors, but not through the customers. The reasons for bullwhip effect are plenty. The first is that the managers each level in the supply chain have their own perceptions of the demand and they forecast in accordance to these perceptions. When organizations come up with a product in the current market, they estimate the demand based on the present market conditions (Chen, 2012). Several companies in the supply chain order more than they usually sell to make sure that shortages are prevented. This inventory varies depending on the usually estimated market fluctuations. When demand increases, the companies that are usually preferred by the consumer will increase their inventory to meet the demand (Akkermans, 2013). When the demand decreases, the point closest to the customer consumption of the supply chain will decrease the inventory which will affect the later stages. The major reason for the bullwhip effect is due to the individual demand forecasts of each of the company in the supply chain. Lack of communication during operations also because situations where companies may not provide information up the supply chain about the present market conditions, causes an in appropriate inventory to be stocked (Jaipuria, 2013). These fluctuation is the customer demands are usually managed by implementing a point-of sale (POS) system that is integrated with a just-in-time (JIT) inventory system. This allows each function in the supply chain to gain knowledge on the demand of the individual goods (Duan, 2015). Assembling work of Toyota is done by only 20% of its total employees and in case of Boeing it is only 35%. The remaining work involves the creation required subsystem, subassemblies and component assembly which is usually done by sub-contractors. Toyota uses a just in time system and encourages all its vendors to meet demand from consumers which has resulted increased and stable sales of the company. They also use the just in-time delivery system for the same. To eradicate Bullwhip effect inter-company coordination especially between the various parties involved in necessary. The company focuses on meeting the needs of a consumer by providing products that are high in quality, with a wide range of choices and a friendly store environment. Each store's has about 2,500 different products and the services are tailored according to the preference of the local customers. Each stores size id from 2,400 to 3,000 square feet. In most of the locations they are present in the corners for easy access and better visibility. The sub-assemblies are stored in the warehouse using automated guided vehicles. Creed is used more often than credo for this declaration of guiding principles. The narrator, Mishra, is first introduced shortly after a brief setting of the Middle East before the tragic events of September 11, 2002. Described as being from India, he is now a London reporter writing various articles for English and American magazines. Through his encounters the reader receives an inside view on Middle Eastern life and history. Beginning with Pakistan’s governmental history, a foundation is set describing various ruling powers such as General Zia-ul-haq’s military takeover from Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1977 and the final Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in the 1990’s. The cruelty inflicted by these harsh takeovers is apparent by descriptions of â€Å"shutting down schools, smashing TVs, and VCRs, and tearing up photographs† (Mishra 103). Different reasons for supporting and joining the Taliban and other organizations are also explored. You realise how long you have been working but in front of you stands a mound of urgent paper work. Just having a glimpse brings a thumping pain in your head. You decide to return home as it is getting late. A sudden strike of rumbling thunder makes you spring slightly into the cold air. You stare towards the reflective windows, but all you see is a flash of dazzling white light. The empty office lights starts to flicker. You walk out of the cluttered office at a fast pace. Haiti has the distinction of being the first black independent republic, who only two centuries ago was the wealthiest country in the New World and represented more than a quarter of France's economy. Yet today Haiti has been called â€Å"un pays tite-en-bas† where about 80% if Haitians live in absolute poverty, and almost 1/3 of the population is ill or underweight. A long history of political oppression, soil erosion, lack of knowledge and population density of 618 people per square mile has caused modern Haiti to become the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. After almost 200 years of rule by a series of despotic emperors, eccentric kings, cruel dictators, powerless presidents and tyrannical generals Haiti is living in absolute poverty. Haiti has a GDP of less then $8 billion a year and the per capita income is less then $250 showing how poor Haiti truly is. When half a million slaves revolted against their colonial masters in 1804, Haiti became the first nation to abolish slavery. Haiti saw 22 heads of state in 72 years causing unrest and turmoil between the Haitian people. After four consecutive years of Haitian presidents being murdered or disposed, the United States sent marines to Haiti. When the Americans left in 1934, Haiti was again in turmoil, with frequent coups, revolutions, dictatorship, and street violence until the election of Franiois Duvalier in 1957. Duvaliers rule soon turned into one of repression and fear and he soon declared himself president-for-life in 1964. Following his death, his son Jean-Claude used the same violent methods of his father to keep control of Haiti. Fewer then 13% have access to safe drinking water, and most Haitians struggle to find enough food to eat each day (it is estimated that Haiti produces only 40% of the food it needs). Although public education in Haiti is free, textbooks and other school materials are not, and as a result many children, especially those in rural areas (the 90% of Haitians that live in absolute poverty, also called peasants) cannot afford to go to school. It is estimated that about 90% of Haitians are illiterate. Even though legally, education is free and open to all, only about 30% of Haitian children ever begin school, and of the 30%, only 2% stay in school beyond the 5th grade. Many factors play into the lack of education in Haiti, such as education being mainly in French, even though Creole is the official language in Haiti, also after the fifth year students must pass a difficult examination, which is also in French, causing many students to not pass. The lack of proper teachers and inadequate supplies, as well as overcrowding in schools has made it difficult for Haitians to get an education. Haiti's misfortune has continued through the years with a series of natural disasters. Severe deforestation, leading to flooding and landslides, and a lack of proper emergency services and infrastructure has resulted in the storms causing the deaths of thousands of Haitians. In 2008, four separate hurricanes – Fay, Gustav, Hanna, and Ike – in the space of 30 days led to the deaths of more than 800 people. About 60 per cent of the country's harvest were destroyed and entire cities were rendered desolate and uninhabitable. In January 2010, a devastating 7. 0 magnitude earthquake resulting in the deaths of thousands and the loss of many homes and buildings (see figure 5). Haiti is a country full of tragedy and despair. 380 000 Haitians were infected with HIV/AIDS by 2000 and the life expectancy has dropped to the early age of 53. Only 8 people out of every thousand have telephone service and less then 6% of people have access to electrical power. Social parasite like Fagin is the breader of the criminals he makes young thieves work for him and if they are caught, they suffer imprisonment and even death while he gets off scot-free. Is it Worth It to Compete for an Ivy League Education Its undeniable that  a degree from an Ivy League college holds a lot of prestige.  Ã‚  In fact,  I  have personally experienced the benefit of an Ivy League degree in my career, as Ive set out first as a lawyer and then as a resume writer and college essay advisor.   B.A. Yale 91 is enough to convince some people to hire me.   Many employers prefer to hire people with one of those magic schools on their resumes. I have a secret to share:  Ã‚  I sometimes wish I had gone to Oberlin where the students might be a bit more hippie and  down to earth, i.e., more like me.   But I will never regret having a Yale degree on my resume.   It helped me get into another prestigious school (NYU Law 98) and has gained the respect of several employers and clients. A recent article by Eve Tahmincioglu on msnbc.com, An Ivy  League degree no surefire path to success,  explores whether an Ivy League degree really makes a difference when it comes to how well a candidate will do in a job.   The article concludes that hard work, not the college name on your diploma, leads to career success.   Nevertheless, people with Ivy League degrees have significantly higher incomes than their non-Ivy counterparts: â€Å"The typical Ivy League bachelor’s graduate earns about 27 percent more early in their career, and about 47 percent more by the time he or she is about 40, than the typical bachelor’s graduate from all U.S. schools,† according to compensation website PayScale.com. I wonder:   Do employers like to hire someone from the right school simply because of the prestige, or do they beleive they can rely on  the pre-screening that the Ivies (and other top schools) do on every admittee?   It seems to me that theres a  really good chance that someone who made it into an Ivy  League school is among the  best and the brightest.  Ã‚  Thats not to say that a huge number of the best and the brightest and the most hard working did not go to Ivy League universities, either because they did not get in or because they chose less pricey options. Its understandable that many students prefer to attend Ivies, regardless of whether this education is  essential  to  career success.   Ivy League colleges come with  a guaranteed caliber to the student body and community, to the professors, and to the education.   And of course, the degree opens up many doors with ease. The competition to get in to Ivy League and other top schools, as reported by  Ms. Tahmincioglu in her MSNBC article, is fiercer than ever:   According to the Harvard Crimson, the school accepted a record-low 6.9 percent of applicants this year even though the number of applications actually went up 5 percent - topping 30,000 for the first time in the school’s history. The long and the short of it is that if you want to have an easier path to some of the most prestigious jobs in the country, a Yale, Harvard or Princeton degree will go far.   You still need to do well once youre there, and you still need to work hard once youre in the work force.   But the big names on the resume dont hurt a bit.   And in my book, thats enough to make it worthwhile to shoot for the best. The Naval Blockade Of Cuba History Essay Since the morning of October 16, 1962, it has been clear that Robert F. Kennedys involvement in the Cuban missile crisis was the definitive factor in the prevention of war. In the months precluding October, U.S owned U-2 spy planes discovered that the Soviet Union were building surface-to-air missile launch sites. Suspicion was also raised from reports that there was an increase in the number of Soviet ships arriving in Cuba, which the United States government feared were carrying weapons. President John F. Kennedy and his own Intelligence Department watched on with great alarm, and seemed to tolerate the arms being supplied to Cuba, as long as the Soviets did not begin to place nuclear missiles there. On September 11th, 1962, J. Kennedy warned the U.S.S.R that he would prevent by whatever means might be necessary Cubas becoming of an offensive military base. Robert F. Kennedy became involved when on October 16th, 1962, President John F. Kennedy revealed to him that a U-2 had just fi nished a photographic mission two days earlier, and had produced evidence that Russia was placing missiles and atomic weapons in Cuba, thus confirming the countries first suspicions. For the next thirteen days, the Cuban missile crisis became R. Kennedys life  [2]  , as he joined the Presidents Executive Committee of the National Security Council, or EXCOMM, to discuss a reasonable but efficient strategy. The members of the EXCOMM discussed, with the help of Robert F. Kennedy, 5 possible courses of action  [3]  : Do nothing. Use diplomatic pressure to get the Soviet Union to remove the missiles. An air attack on the missiles. A full military invasion The naval blockade of Cuba, which was redefined as a more selective quarantine. For each strategy, pros and cons were discussed between the members, and it was mutually agreed upon that a plan that would avoid conflict, while still showing the U.S.A to be strong and serious about the situation, had to be conceived. The Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman, General Maxwell. D. Taylor, whom was the military adviser for EXCOMM, disagreed and believed that the full-scale attack and invasion was the only probable solution. However, R. Kennedy was extremely sceptical of this, and it was he who helped develop the strategy to blockade Cuba, as it was, in his own mind, the only option that would avoid nuclear war. It was also important for the United States to redefine the blockade as a selective quarantine, as a blockade is a direct act of war. In reference to the other options available, and especially the air strike, R. Kennedy said: Youre going to kill an awful lot of people and we are going to take a lot of heat for it à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ youre going to announce the reason that youre doing it is because theyre sending this kind of missiles, well, I think its almost incumbent upon the Russians then to say, Well, were going to send them in again, and if you do it again à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ were going to do the same thing to Turkey or Iran. He also believed that attacking Cuba by air would gesture the Soviets to presume a clear line to blockade Berlin, which they had done previously in 1948 after the conclusion of World War II. If the U.S. was to lose Berlin, R. Kennedy believed her allies would lose faith. He feared that doubt would be casted on the superpower, and that many would believe the only reason they lost Berlin was because they could not peacefully resolve the Cuban situation  [4]  . On the 24th October, the blockade began, and the first 20 missile-carrying ships that were closest to the 800km blockade zone at the time stopped or turned around, in order to avoid their ships being searched  [5]  . It is clear that without the ideas R. Kennedy put forth, an uncivil military strike would have been initiated, and it is for this reason that he is credited with playing the most pivotal role in precluding nuclear war. With R. Kennedys help and support, the U.S.A. had only successfully stopped one problem of the crisis, for they still had to deal with the missiles already in Cuba. After many negotiations, requests, and exit strategies were discussed between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R, a plan of action became apparent to the Soviets. They would agree to dismantle their Cuban missiles in exchange for the U.S. never invading Cuba, and the removal of the U.S. owned Jupiter missiles in Turkey and Italy. R. Kennedy was, at first, against this and was only willing to agree upon the no invasion policy. He believed that this would show a sign of weakness, something that the United States was strongly trying to avoid. However, as no other options became apparent, R. Kennedy suggested their removal after a period of 6 months, as there were already plans to disassemble them. John F. Kennedy suggested his brother be the man to speak with Soviet Ambassador for the United States Anatoly Dobrynin about the crisis, a nd it was his negations with the Ambassador that played the most essential role in the final circumstances of the predicament. R. Kennedys contact with Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin was his second biggest contribution to the Cuban missile crisis. Three times R. Kennedy met with Dobrynin, with each meeting being held in secret so that both sides, the U.S and U.S.S.R, could talk freely. Together, they discussed ideas to work out a solution. This allowed R. Kennedy to successfully convey his brothers wishes to Dobrynin, which, as stated before, called for the secret removal of all Jupiter missiles in Turkey and Italy. R. Kennedy had to make it clear that if the Soviets were to go public with their agreement, the U.S. would strongly deny it. He stated to Dobrynin that the missiles would be removed within a short time after the crisis was over, to avoid suspicion from the U.S. citizens. After each meeting, Dobrynin would cable a report through to the Russian Premier Nikita Khrushchev, telling his superior of new developments in the crisis, who evidently valued these reports greatly. R. Kennedy, being an infl uential American official, was capable of accurately informing Dobrynin and the Soviets how urgent the situation was. This direct contact with the Soviets was the key feature in the outcome of the Cuban missile crisis, and portrays how important R. Kennedys role was in the crisis. On October 29th Russian Premier Nikitia Khrushchev wrote a letter to John F. Kennedy stating that: The Soviet government, in addition to previously issued instructions on the cessation of further work at the building sites for the weapons, has issued a new order on the dismantling of the weapons which you describe as offensive and their crating and return to the Soviet Union. The quarantine continued to watch over Cuba to ensure that all offensive weapons were shipped out, and on November 20th, 1962 at 6:45pm the blockade was formally ended, although it was not till December 5th and 6th that the final Soviet missiles were shipped off. True to his word and the informal agreement, R. Kennedy made sure that all U.S. missiles were disassembled, and by April 24, 1963 the last of the missiles had been defected and were flown out of Turkey shortly after. These final actions show that the work R. Kennedy contributed to the United States throughout the Cuban missile crisis was extremely fundamental in the avoidance of nuclear war. It can be argued that Robert F. Kennedys role was mediocre and that the successful outcome of the Cuban missile crisis should be more broadly shared. He famously passed a note on to the president, which read: I now know how Tojo felt when he was planning Pearl Harbor. The argument arises because it is unclear if R. Kennedy was making an ironic comment, ridiculing the members of EXCOMM calling for an air strike, or if he in fact meant it literally. It could have been that in the early stages of the crisis, R. Kennedy was for an invasion of Cuba, and he genuinely felt the same way the Japanese would have. Despite this, further evidence shows that R. Kennedy clearly supported the blockade, and even by simply comparing a U.S. attack on Cuba with the Japaneses bombing of Pearl Harbor, R. Kennedy was able to discredit the pro-invasion members of EXCOMM.
